Human heart and circulatory system | Wikimedia
The heart and the circulatory system do an incredible job, working together tirelessly to supply every single cell in your body with oxygen and other life critical nutrients. Research looks at how they do this, from what’s happening in the cells right up to how they interact with other systems in the body. Diseases of the heart are one of the biggest risks to health we currently have so scientists need to look at what happens when the system fails, how we can help it recover, and what we can do to protect it.
Taking part in this zone is a scientist using computer models to understand how the heart works, a scientist using ultrasound scans to watch the heart beating and another who works with patients with heart problems. Also in the Heart Zone is a sports lecturer looking at exercise rehabilitation, a scientist creating 3D and 4D models of the heart and a scientist finding out how to ‘build better babies’.
