James and Bruno, congratulations! During every event we ask the scientists and moderators to nominate their top students — those who’ve made the most of the event, shown enthusiasm and asked some really great questions. James and Bruno from Renhold VC Lower School were both nominated by scientists for asking great questions in a live chat. “They came across very interested in blood transfusion… I think they’re very inquisitive and are going to be great scientists when they’re older.” As the student winners, James and Bruno will each receive a certificate and a gift voucher. Well done to James and Bruno, and to everyone who took part. There were so many interesting questions, and comments, and we hope you enjoyed being part of the Heart Zone! PS: YOU now have the power to say which scientists and engineers take part next time — click here to be the judge.
Students! Did you do your profile survey? Check your email for a chance to win a £20 voucher and tell us what you think now! I am over the moon that the students chose me! I had such a great time interacting with them and the other scientists were so smart and interesting that this is very special to me. Many thanks to them and to the I’m a Scientist team who worked very hard to make this event as fun, enjoyable and lively as possible. Mission accomplished! I also want to thank the Schools of Bioengineering and Cardiovascular Sciences at King’s College London where I work. They have always been very supportive of STEM engagement and gave me the opportunity to change my approach of my work. While doing STEM engagement, I have always been stricken to realise how little I know about basic phenomena related to my field … Continue reading

I’m a Scientist, Get me out of here is back! Between the 11th and 22nd June, students at 10 primary schools will be putting their questions to 6 scientists in the Heart Zone. For the latest news and announcements about the event, find us on Twitter, @imascientist, and follow the hashtag, #IASUK. The Heart Zone is for Primary Schools and is supported by Wellcome. Samuel Vennin | King’s College London I use computer models to help understanding how the heart works and create new tools to help clinicians treating patients. Pankaj Garg | University of Sheffield I create 3D and 4D models of flow within the heart to better understand complex flow and thunderstorms in the heart. Lucy Green | University of Southampton’s Institute of Developmental Sciences I’m working out how to build better babies, because this sets up how well they do in the world they are born into and their health in later life. Kate Kuyt | … Continue reading
