Question: how do you blow up stuff?

That is certainly an interesting question but something I not fully sure about. In my day to day job we do not blow things up but I do remember in my chemistry class at school our teacher did an experiment with very reactive metals and placed them in water and they reacted to cause flames or some exploded.
