I find it really interesting, how it works, and how it just keeps going. The average car engine lasts for 11 years, and might break down a few times and need parts replacing in that time. Your heart beats an average of 80 beats a minute, every hour of every day for every year of your life! That’s 4,800 times an hour, 115,000 times a day, 42,048,000 times a year. If you live to be 90 that 3,784,320,000 times, and for the majority of people, doesn’t have any problems until they’re much older!

Working with hearts helps so many people, about 500 people a week in the UK need a pacemaker putting in every week, and heart disease is one of the biggest killers in the UK. One person witth cardiovascular disease dies every three minutes in the UK, and there are over 7 million people in the country living with cardiovascular disease right now.

Because it is the most fascinating muscle! Can you imagine that in one year, it will eject more than the volume of an Olympic swimming pool? Plus, if you want your research to be applicable to as many people as possible, this is the best part of the body to work on! You can truly change people’s life by working on the heart 🙂

Heart disease can kill and usually does! Helping patients survive and live a good quality of life is the MOST satisfying thing I do. There is a buzz to it!
