Good question I personally experience this so I do not eat cheese anytime near going to bed. However research has been done and there is no solid evidence to suggest that cheese does cause nightmares and if so how. The reason they believe it may cause nightmares is if you eat immediately before going to bed or if you have over eaten and get indigestion which would give you a restless night. Other reasons are cheese can trigger gastrointestinal distress which causes a restless sleep. But this still remains a bit of a mystery if it actually does or not.

I have never heard of that theory! And I am French so I eat looooads of cheese… Never did it at night though.
I would go with Jordan and say that since cheese contains lot of fat, you will have a tougher time digesting it and that might give problems sleeping, hence the nightmares. But I think this is more of a legend because I honnestly have never heard of anyone blaming the dream the made on the cheese they ate before going to bed. Us French people would be having nightmares every night^^
